NICOLA STURGEON has hit out at Rangers fans for his or her "disgraceful" breach of lockdown rules.
Thousands of Rangers football fans have descended on Glasgow's George Square tonight to celebrate the club's title win. Pictures show large gatherings of individuals, not wearing masks and not adhering to social distancing rules.
In response, Nicola Sturgeon has urged fans to disperse and return home, while condemning their breach of lockdown rules.
She wrote on Twitter: "I share people’ anger at this. Everyone has made numerous sacrifices within the past year & seeing a minority risk our progress is infuriating & disgraceful.
"It is deeply unfair to the whole country, and therefore the police have a tough enough job already. Please ask fans to travel home @RangersFC."
Earlier within the day, the Scottish First Minister warned fans: "I congratulate @RangersFC on the title win & recognise what a flash this is often for fans. But gathering in crowds just risks lives, and will delay exit from lockdown for everybody else.
"If those gathering care in the least about the security of others & the country, they're going to head home."
Pictures and videos from the Glasgow streets show jubilant fans waving flags and letting of smoke bombs as they celebrated winning the league.
The gathering of football fans defies current lockdown restrictions, which currently only allows two households to satisfy outdoors and bans public gatherings.
As well as assembling at the town centre, other supporters gathered outside Ibrox Stadium to celebrate the team's 55th title.
Police officers are pictured at scene, as they plan to control and disperse the growing number of fans.
Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, previously urged fans to not attend the title celebration.
He said: “We are conscious of proposed gatherings in both George Square and out of doors Ibrox stadium on Sunday, 7 March, 2021.
“In line with current Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines, all gatherings are currently prohibited and that we would urge members of the general public to suits these restrictions.
"An appropriate policing response is in situation and officers are already using the approach of engaging, explaining and inspiring compliance with the restrictions.
“Our response are going to be measured and appropriate. We understand fans want to celebrate but they need to do so safely and lawfully.
“We still ask everyone to try to do the proper thing to prevent the spread of the virus.”
Rangers clinched the title after Celtic did not beat Dundee United this weekend.
The result gave Rangers an unassailable 20-point lead and therefore the title for the primary time in 10 years.
